Creative Arc Commission: The Commotion Choir

Exeter Northcott Theatre:
The Commotion Choir
Themes: Health & Wellbeing;
People & Place-shaping

The Commotion Choir will involve up to 50 local people aged 18+ from all backgrounds and walks of life.

In October, the Northcott will produce an ambitious production of a brand-new play by South-West writer Sarah Dickenson called The Commotion Time.  The play is based around the Prayerbook Rebellions in the mid-1500s when the Devonian and Cornish people marched on Exeter in protest at changes to their faith and way of life.  What happened during that time shapes much of the city and communities of today.  It is a remarkable true story, centring three amazing women, and setting modern Exeter in the historical context that shaped it.  In terms of people and place, it is utterly compelling as a story of rebellion, and as a project for people who live here to be a part of.

To that end, alongside the professional cast and experienced creative team (all of whom will be South-West based), this Creative Arc funding supports the creation of The Commotion Choir, who will create their own public sharing as well as then going on to feature in the professional production.

This is a project about bringing people together to celebrate, through story and music, the power of place and our distinct but also shared histories. And to have lots of fun together.
